Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 20 May 2024

Congratulations to Mrs Tunkel and her husband on the arrival of Cecily Peggy Rose. She arrived last week weighing 7.2lbs. As Mrs Tunkel is a Channing alumna, perhaps Cecily will follow in her footsteps.

You can view all events for the year in the school calendar via our Parent Portal: SchoolBase login. Your calendar view should already be filtered to display the Junior School events and events which are specific to your daughter’s year group. 

The ‘School Calendar Parent View’ button shows the complete calendar, which can be viewed by each month, week or day. Events also appear on the right-hand side of the home page under ‘Forthcoming Events’ and the monthly view of the calendar also appears at the bottom of the home page. 

Tomorrow, we will be celebrating cultural diversity with a number of activities to highlight how our society includes people from many different backgrounds. The morning will focus on diversity being something exciting, that should be celebrated, and highlight how important it is that everyone within society feels represented and valued. Thanks go to Miss Eliad and Miss Jimenez (Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Leads) for organising an exciting array of events and to the many parents who will be sharing aspects of their culture with pupils across the school. This is ahead of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, held annually on Wednesday 22 May, to celebrate the richness of the world’s cultures.

Any unclaimed and unnamed lost property (both uniform and non-uniform) will be out in the courtyard from 8am – 8:30am and from 2:50pm, weather permitting, before half term on Friday 24 May.

Any unclaimed items still remaining will be donated to charity (non-uniform) or the CA’s pre-loved uniform sale (uniform).

Due to members of staff attending the Key Stage 2 residential trips taking place this term, there will be a number of club cancellations. Please contact jsreceptionist@channing.co.uk if you wish to sign your daughter(s) up for Mini Owls (EY and KS1) and/or Late Owls.

We will be celebrating the National Festival of Fieldwork during the week commencing Monday 3 June. Throughout the week, teachers will be using their Topic (KS1) and Geography (KS2) lessons to get out and about in our school grounds to explore our local area. Some of the themes we will explore include: 

• What geography can we see from here? 
• How did the street get its name? 
• Investigating habitats in the school ground
• Map work and orienteering

To complement the week and in celebration of our fabulous grounds, Miss Snowdowne (Geography Lead) has collaborated with Jade Francis (Alumnae and Development Manager) who has kindly sourced some wonderful photographs from our archive of the grounds. Many of these photos date back to the 1900s, when the school first invited girls as boarders to more recent photos of the development of Fairseat Hall, the MUGA and the adventure playground. 

You are invited to take a journey and view a sample of these photographs which will be displayed in the Library after your daughter’s dismissal time from 3.00pm on Monday 3 June – Wednesday 5 June.

Due to the display in the Library, Late Collection will not run between Monday 3 – Wednesday 5 May. Any girls who are not collected at their usual dismissal time will be taken to Mini Owls.

We have collaborated with TooledUp Education: an invaluable digital library of evidence-based resources on all aspects of parenting, education and family life. Founder, Dr Kathy Weston, has collated the best and most up-to-date research from around the world and distilled it into usable, easy to understand resources which can be instantly applied to daily life. From Monday 3 June – Friday 14 June, SPEARS House will be collecting for the Alexandra Wylie Tower Foundation (AWTH). The AWTF is a charity closely connected to the school that runs a weekly food bank, which has recently been relocated to Archway. Those in the local community, who are desperately struggling, can get a hot meal, clothes and also stock up on basic essentials for the week ahead. Anything that our community can spare is very welcomed and the AWTF greatly appreciates our continued support.

Items that continue to be desperately needed are:

• Washing powder
• Sanitary items
• Oil
• Tuna
• Sugar 
• Salt 
• Long life milk 
• Microwave rice 
• Coffee 
• Warm coats (all ages and sizes) 
• Shoes (all ages and sizes) 

Please place any donations in one of the blue bins labelled Food Bank collection in the courtyard at the front of school. 

Accelerate Sports, who currently run our Key Stage 2 Tag-Rugby club, would like to invite Key Stage 2 pupils to experience the Sonics. Accelerate Sports have started their introductory sessions, which run on Thursdays, 6.30pm-8.00pm at the home of Saracens: Bramley Sports Ground, N14 4AB.

During these initial sessions, pupils will be practising rugby skills and will slowly be introduced to the elements of contact rugby. Most importantly, they will be bringing each player into the very welcoming family of the Sonics.

There is no charge for the introductory sessions and they will not be playing any contact games. Should your daughter wish to continue to play at the end of the summer, they will be starting the rugby season in September.

During half term holidays, encourage your daughter to participate in the Half Term Battle of the Bands: a times tables challenge for girls in Year 1 – Year 6. The competition will be open from 8am on Saturday May 25 until 4pm on Sunday 2 June. Players can take part between 8am‎ and ‎4pm each day and only their first ‎30‎ minutes each day will count. The top three players in each form will receive a certificate. There will also be a prize for the form showing the most practice.

The CA is hosting a festival-themed summer fair for the girls and their families, with food trucks, hair braiding, games and prizes, inflatables, a surf simulator and bumper cars, a 360 photo booth, glitter tattoos and nail painting, ribbon wand and flower crown making stalls, and much more! 

Please donate (nut-free) baked goodies on the day to the Cake Stall.

As with all festivals, there will be live performances and interactive fun. Sharkey & George will be running a dance workshop (Rec – Y2 recommended) and there will be a theatre production of ‘Rubbish Romeo & Juliet’ (Y3-6 recommended). The CA is still collecting small preloved items for the ChanFest prize stall: any toys, hair accessories, pieces of stationery, etc in good condition that children can pick as a prize using the tokens they win from the games stalls. Nothing bigger than a Sylvanian, please.

Your donations will help us reduce the amount of new items we have to buy and promote sustainability. Thank you very much in advance. 

The CA is running a preloved uniform stall at the Welcome Morning for New Families on Tuesday 18 June for incoming Reception girls. Please donate any unwanted, clean and unlabeled uniform (especially PE kit) in sizes 20, 22 and 24. Other sizes are also welcome

The CA is recruiting and confirming Form Reps for the next school year (2024/25).  If you would like to continue or step into the role for your class, or have any questions, please email jschanningassociation@gmail.com 

The role of the Rep is to help run CA-organised events and activities for our girls and their families, to organise class socials, and to manage subs / arrange seasonal gifts for Form Teachers. You are supported by the Co-Chairs throughout the year. 

The Channing Association Parent and Teacher Choir meets fortnightly in term time on Thursday evenings from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at St Michael’s Church in Highgate. The choir is open to all genres of music, and there is a small cost per person per session to cover venue hire and sheet music.

Upcoming rehearsal dates are: 6 and 20 June, and 4 July.
