Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 20 May 2024

Posted: 20th May 2024

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents

This morning, I was delighted to watch the confident and enthusiastic presentation by our Year 2 girls as they took centre stage to share their assembly on the captivating theme of inventors and inventions. The stage was adorned with a backdrop showcasing images of inventors and their groundbreaking creations, setting the scene for an awe-inspiring journey through history. The girls, dressed as various inventors and holding props representing their inventions, spoke to the school with enthusiasm and passion.

From the invention of the wheel, which revolutionised transportation and agriculture, to Alexander Graham Bell’s groundbreaking telephone, which transformed communication, each narrative was a testament to the power of human ingenuity and determination. We learnt about the Wright Brothers’ pioneering flight, Marie Curie’s groundbreaking scientific discoveries, and the entrepreneurial spirit of Madam C.J. Walker, who revolutionised hair care for Afro textured hair. The girls also highlighted contemporary inventors like Fei-Fei Li, who is leading the way in artificial intelligence, and Ruth Handler, who introduced Barbie to the world, encouraging imaginative play and career exploration for generations of children. From trampolines to earmuffs, Braille to Leonardo da Vinci’s visionary creations, each story celebrated the boundless potential of human imagination and the profound impact of innovation on our lives.

Throughout the assembly, our young performers took us on an inspiring journey through time, sharing stories of curiosity, bravery, perseverance, and resilience – qualities epitomised by our Channing Characters – that have shaped the world we live in today. I was particularly impressed by the captivating tales of female and young inventors. Curiosity Fox, Bravery Mole, Perseverance Squirrel, and Resilience Robin would surely be extremely proud! By fostering these qualities, we are empowering the girls to become the inventors of tomorrow, shaping a brighter future for themselves and the world around them.

I hope you share in our excitement and pride as we continue to nurture and inspire the next generation of innovators. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in our mission to ignite the spark of curiosity and imagination in every child.

With warm wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis

Head of the Junior School

Cultural Diversity: Tuesday 21 May

Tomorrow, we will be celebrating cultural diversity with a number of activities to highlight how our society includes people from many different backgrounds. The morning will focus on diversity being something exciting, that should be celebrated, and highlight how important it is that everyone within society feels represented and valued. Thanks go to Miss Eliad and Miss Jimenez (Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Leads) for organising an exciting array of events and to the many parents who will be sharing aspects of their culture with pupils across the school. This is ahead of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, held annually on Wednesday 22 May, to celebrate the richness of the world’s cultures.

National Festival of Fieldwork: Monday 3 June - Wednesday 5 June

We will be celebrating the National Festival of Fieldwork during the week commencing Monday 3 June. Throughout the week, teachers will be using their Topic (KS1) and Geography (KS2) lessons to get out and about in our school grounds to explore our local area. Some of the themes we will explore include:

  • What geography can we see from here?
  • How did the street get its name?
  • Investigating habitats in the school ground
  • Map work and orienteering

To complement the week and in celebration of our fabulous grounds, Miss Snowdowne (Geography Lead) has collaborated with Jade Francis (Alumnae and Development Manager) who has kindly sourced some wonderful photographs from our archive of the grounds. Many of these photos date back to the 1900s, when the school first invited girls as boarders to more recent photos of the development of Fairseat Hall, the MUGA and the adventure playground.

You are invited to take a journey and view a sample of these photographs which will be displayed in the Library after your daughter’s dismissal time from 3.00pm on Monday 3 June – Wednesday 5 June.

Due to the display in the Library, Late Collection will not run between Monday 3 – Wednesday 5 May. Any girls who are not collected at their usual dismissal time will be taken to Mini Owls.
