Channing Jazz Evening – 2nd April 2025

On the last night of the previous term, we celebrated the 17th annual Jazz Evening, an exceptional event masterfully led by our renowned jazz musician in residence, Mr Theo Travis. The evening was a delightful showcase of talent, opening with Mr Travis accompanied by our own brilliant Mr Alan Brown on drums, Ms Andrea Vicary on piano, and Mr Alex Keen on bass. This fantastic quartet set the tone beautifully, beginning their performance with a classic jazz standard that instantly captivated the audience.

Following this dynamic start was an impressive array of vocal performances from some of our most gifted singers. Juliet B, Hannah D, Eve C, Teresa G, Anna G, Georgie G, and Evie M each took the stage in turn, delivering superb solos that highlighted their unique vocal abilities and remarkable confidence.

Adding to the night’s excitement, our very own Chacapella ensemble delivered a striking rendition of the timeless classic ‘Feeling Good’, featuring an innovative and polished arrangement that drew enthusiastic applause from the audience.

A delightful Saxophone Duo comprised of Natalia B and Cristina C enchanted everyone with their spirited and lively interpretation of ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’. Their sparkling performance was closely followed by Mr Dodds’ Brass Ensemble, whose soulful and beautifully harmonised version of ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’ provided a melodic highlight of the evening.

A standout moment came with Kezia C, who shone brilliantly on saxophone performing Chick Corea’s energetic ‘Armando’s Rhumba’, earning deserved accolades for her impressive musicianship.

The grand finale was delivered by our accomplished school Jazz Band under the expert guidance of Mr Travis. They thrilled the audience with an unforgettable set, concluding with Duke Ellington’s iconic and rhythmically vibrant ‘Caravan’. It was a fitting close to an extraordinary night, highlighting the remarkable talent and passion of our student musicians inspired by our outstanding jazz professionals. Truly an unforgettable evening!
