Dear Parents
I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful half term break and that the girls are feeling refreshed and excited to be back at school, ready to dive into their next steps in learning!
This morning in assembly, we had the pleasure of hearing from Mr Rich (Sustainability & Forest School Lead), along with the Sustainability Team. They were thrilled to announce that, thanks to the dedication of our Sustainability Team across both the Junior and Senior School, we have been awarded the Green Flag Award for the second consecutive year! This prestigious recognition celebrates our pupils’ commitment to environmental sustainability and highlights our ongoing dedication as an Eco-School.
In line with Eco-Schools’ ‘Cut Your Carbon Month’, next week we’ll be celebrating Sustainability Week. Here’s what we have planned to encourage the girls to think green and act sustainably:
Pre-Loved Book Sale for Charity: Tuesday 12 & Wednesday 13 November
On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will be holding a pre-loved book sale during breaktime. All funds raised will go to JUST ONE Tree, supporting global reforestation efforts. If your daughter has any spare books that another girl might enjoy, please send them in with your daughter to be delivered to Mr Rich’s classroom (4R) by the end of this week. Books will be priced at 50p or £1, and we appreciate any contributions to help make this a success.
Car-Free Friday: Friday 15 November
On Friday 15 November, we encourage everyone to travel to school as sustainably as possible – whether by walking, scooting, cycling, taking the bus or train, or using park and ride. Let’s come together to reduce our carbon footprint on “Car-Free Friday!”
Sustainability Poster Competition
As part of Car-Free Friday, the Sustainability Team launched an online poster competition. All girls are invited to create a poster persuading others to choose sustainable travel options. There will be prizes for EY/KS1 and KS2, and the winning posters will be displayed around the school. More details will be shared by the Sustainability Officers in the girls’ forms.
It was a pleasure to hear from the Sustainability Team this morning and to learn about the exciting plans for Sustainability Week. Pupil voice is a cornerstone of our community; we believe it’s essential for the girls to have ownership and take responsibility for their school and wider community, building valuable life skills along the way.
Our girls make a positive, lasting impact on many aspects of school life, including our environment. Last year, for example, the School Council helped create a beautiful mindfulness area on our grounds and designed new playground markings featuring our beloved Channing Characters. Thanks to the generous support of the Channing Association, these designs were installed over the break, and it was a delight to see the girls enjoying them during today’s break times.
Thank you for your support in making Channing a greener school. Let’s make Sustainability Week a memorable and impactful experience for the girls.
With warm wishes
Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School
