Anatomy Club Kicks Off the Year with Starfish Dissection

Posted: 20th September 2024

The first Anatomy Club session of the academic year began with an exciting hands-on activity: the dissection of a starfish. Students dove into the intricacies of marine biology, carefully snipping around the starfish’s central disc to reveal its stomach.

With precision, the stomach tissue was removed, exposing the ring canal, a crucial part of the starfish’s water vascular system. This system plays a key role in controlling the movement of water within the organism, allowing it to function and move effectively.

The dissection continued as one of the starfish’s rays was opened, revealing more fascinating details. Each ray houses part of the digestive system, and beneath it, the reproductive system, or gonads, could be observed. To delve even deeper into the anatomy, some students used microscopes to examine the stomach tissue more closely, gaining an even greater understanding of this unique creature.
