Pupils throughout the school took part in activities for International Women’s Day on Wednesday. In form-time pupils watched a video recorded specially for Channing by the Team GB athlete Victoria Ohuruogu, in which she shared her tips for aspiring athletes and insights into the challenges female athletes face in their careers. And Senior Fem Soc led an assembly for Sixth-Form, in which they shared their favourite books by feminist writers or with feminist themes, including Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez, Men Explain Things to Me by Rebecca Solnit, Persuasion by Jane Austen and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. And at lunchtime pupils took part in a feminism quiz and wrote pledges to promote gender equity. These included:
Stop pitting successful women against each other
Call people out on minor misogyny
Support women in the music industry
Stand up to injustice in everyday life
It was an interesting and inspiring celebration of International Women’s Day and this year’s theme – Embrace Equity.
