As we reach the end of this half term, we say a heartfelt goodbye to our Transylvanian Scholar, Kincső, who has spent the past several weeks as part of our Channing community.
The Transylvanian Scholar Programme has a remarkable history dating back to 1892, when it was first established through a collaboration between Channing School’s founders, the Sharpe sisters, and Bishop Ferenc József, a Unitarian leader from Transylvania. Its original aim was to provide educational opportunities for girls connected to the Unitarian Church in Transylvania, offering them a year at Channing when it was a boarding school.
Revived in 2012 with the help of alumna Amanda Davidson (Class of 1973), whose own family connection to the original scholarship spans generations, the programme now welcomes a scholar each autumn. Partnering with the János Zsigmond Unitarian College in Kolozsvár, it gives one outstanding student the chance to experience life and learning in London.
During their stay, the scholars attend lessons alongside our Year 12 students, take part in school life, and live with a Channing host family, who play an invaluable role in making them feel at home.
